Watch the sideline at any junior game and you’ll see the same thing: a row of parents holding phones at arm’s length, tracking their kid through a four-inch screen. They’re at the game. They’re not really watching it. And after eighty minutes of shaky panning, what they’ve got is eighty minutes of shaky panning.
The usual fix is to buy your way out of it — a motorised phone cradle, or a dedicated wide-angle camera that runs into four figures. That works. It also means someone has to own the hardware, charge it, carry it, and remember it on a wet Sunday morning.
We wanted the version with no hardware at all.
Set one phone at the halfway line, wide enough to see the whole pitch, and don’t touch it again. It films everything. Nobody stands behind it.
The camera work happens afterwards, in software. We take that fixed wide shot and move a virtual camera around inside it — cropping, panning and zooming a broadcast-shaped window out of the footage you already have. No motors, no moving parts, nothing to break or forget.
That’s the whole trick: the camera stopped being a thing you operate and became something the footage gets put through.
The window tracks the cluster of players rather than the ball. Balls are small, fast and disappear behind legs; a knot of twenty kids does not. It leads the movement slightly, the way a human operator would, and widens out when play spreads. The result watches like a broadcast cut, not like security footage.
This is the one parents actually ask for. Tap your kid once in a still from the match, and you get a cut that stays with them for the whole game — not the ball, not the play, your child. Whether they’re in the thick of it or drifting near the halfway line wondering about snacks.
Every other camera in this category follows the game. A parent doesn’t want the game. They want the one player they came to see.
A cut that follows your child necessarily has other people’s children in the frame. So the auto-camera can blur every face except the player being followed — the child you’re entitled to see stays sharp, everyone else’s kid doesn’t.
We’ve written before about MatchReel being private by default — that an upload is seen by no one until someone deliberately shares it. Automatic footage is where that principle gets tested hardest, because software that films everything is exactly the kind of thing that quietly turns a junior match into a surveillance archive.
So the same rule applies to the auto-camera as to everything else: it is a tool for the people who already have a legitimate reason to see that footage, it keeps other people’s children out of focus, and it doesn’t make anything public that wasn’t already.
Automating the camera shouldn’t mean automating the exposure. The footage gets easier to make; who can see it doesn’t get any looser.
The auto-camera is rolling out to clubs and teams gradually rather than switching on for everyone at once — partly because rendering a full match is genuinely heavy work, and partly because we’d rather get the framing right on real Saturday footage than ship something that looks clever in a demo.
